Do the insurance dance

By: Buffy Paulmino

An up to date travel insurance policy can cover you for unexpected medical expenses, lost luggage and even delayed and cancelled flights and can ultimately make the difference between a last minute bargain break which you thought would cost you just a couple of hundred pounds and the most expensive holiday of your life costing you thousands.

However vital it is, travel insurance doesn't need to be expensive, here are a few tips on how to save as much money as possible when finding a policy to suit your individual needs;

1) Be financially savvy - That is, don't pay for what you can get for free. If you are travelling within the EU obtain a European Health Insurance card from either the local post office or ehic.org.uk. This free card will provide you with either reduced cost or free medical treatments in all EU countries in addition to a number of others such as Switzerland and Norway.

2) Double check your documentation - Check your home and private medical insurance policies if you possess them as many will include clauses that provide certain aspects of your cover abroad.

3) Buy in bulk - If you are a frequent traveller whether you try and get away every now and then for the odd weekend or even a fortnight it is worth looking into purchasing annual cover. This will save you the trouble of purchasing a new policy each time you take a trip and can also potentially save you a substantial amount of money.

4) Shop around - It's worth taking that little bit of extra time looking into different policies with different insurers to ensure you get the best possible price for your required package. Travel agents and banks tend to be that much more expensive for travel insurance as they often include aspects you don't necessarily need. Comparison websites can be useful for this as they will search for policies that only meet your specific requirements.

5) Read the small print - A number of policies will contain small print that will often contain clauses about travellers of a certain age, over 65 for example and any existing medical issues that you or a member of your party may have. These clauses can often result in a company refusing to pay out should you need to make a claim.
