Five Must See Destinations in Laos

By: Shonna Nadoff

1. Wat Sisaket, Ventiane ? In the attractive city of Ventiane is to be found the only surviving monastery after the merciless raids on the city in 1828. Built only 10 years previously by King Anouvong. Though in a poor state of repair, the wat remains ornately decorated and the atmosphere of a location so badly attacked makes it one of the more moving sights in Laos.

2. Louang Phabang ? the only predominantly Lao region of the country is the provider of the most picturesque and typically Laotian scenes featured on many famous postcards. The streams of orange robed monks wandering up through the leafy mountains in the early morning mist and the atmosphere resulting from the geographical splendour and religious significance of the place makes it an unforgettable experience.

3. The Plain of Jars in north eastern Laos is one of the most intriguing archaeological finds in South East Asia. On a fifteen-kilometre stretch of green lowland hills around Phonsavan many clusters of urns predicted to be up to two thousand years old were found. The larger jars measure up to two metres in height, weighing in at around ten tonnes. Beyond knowing that they were created in the megalithic iron age civilisation little is known about the specific significance of purpose of such extraordinary constructions.

4. The Mekong River, passing through Louang Phabang, traverses some of Laos' most breath taking scenery. Taking a slow boat down this important geographical trail is one of the most peaceful and rewarding experience for any traveller of Asia.

5. In the far south of Laos towards the Cambodian border, in the small town of Champasak, are Wat Phou and its myriad of pre-Angkorian temples dating through the sixth and the twelfth centuries. Situated in a lush river valley, the temples form a romantic subject matter for contemplation and exploring the grounds and the surrounding countryside is one of the most memorable visits in Laos.

Whilst enjoying the wonderful prospects of this culturally rich nation, it's important to stay safe and be aware of your personal belongings at all times, especially considering that tourists are favoured prey for petty criminals in major tourist areas.

Shonna Nadoff recommends that you always take out travel insurance. He's recently opted for winter travel insurance from AA Travel Insurance as he will be limited to one ski holiday this year.
