Boracay island is one of the 7,107 islands which form up the archipelago of the Philippines. It is only 7 kilometres long and as narrow as 1 kilometre wide at its narrowest, but is nevertheless a spectacular place. It has 30 beautiful, white sandy beaches, including the 4 kilometre long White Beach that is famous around the world. Boracay is definitely one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines, and is the only place to kitesurf in the country. It is also one of only a handful of kitesurfing locations in the whole of Asia. Compared to most kitesurfing locations, Boracay is a paradise. Certainly, learning the sport here, where mean sea temperatures rarely fall below 27 degrees celsius, has its advantages over learning in Poole, in the UK, where mean sea temperatures could make a grown man cringe. A 4 day tuition package costs around US$275, not a bad price for a course which should have the novice skimming across the waves and performing some of the more technical manoeuvres such as edge control and water starts. One of the main problems with kitesurfing overseas is with travel insurance. Policies often do not automatically cover any injuries sustained in extreme sports, and kitesurfing can be quite dangerous, particularly in high or freak winds. It is always advisable to check the policy document wording. Both Boracay and kitesurfing could make any trip memorable, so kitesurfing in Boracay is bound to be an experience to remember. It will certainly make for some interesting additions to the photo album.

Shonna Nadoff recommends that you always take out travel insurance. He's recently opted for winter travel insurance from AA Travel Insurance as he will be limited to one ski holiday this year.
