Hiking Make sure you bring your walking boots, because New Zealand has hundreds of miles of fabulous trails just waiting to be explored. Tourists can choose from coastal ambles, circular city routes or truly strenuous mountain climbs. The eight trails which have been nationally designated as 'great walks' include the Milford and Routeburn Tracks in Fiordland National Park, and the Lake Waikaremoana Track on the North Island which offer a chance to explore ancient Maori lands. Kayaking There??s no better way to explore New Zealand's scenic coastline than by kayak. One beautiful location to practice your paddling skills is the Abel Tasman Park, where you'll find shallow emerald waters, white-sand beaches and dense forest. Cathedral Cove on the Coromandel Peninsula also offers commanding views of deep caves, volcanic cliffs and golden beaches. Diving Beautiful coral reefs, exotic sea life and ancient wrecks abound in New Zealand's deeps, and divers will find no shortage of under water excitement. The seas around the country boast more than 50 recognised locations, including the wreck of the Rainbow Warrior, famously sunk by the French government in 1985. Caving New Zealand is almost as exciting underground as it is overland. A great spot for cavers of all levels to explore is the North Island's Waitomo Caves - made from eroded limestone karst, they comprise an incredible earthy landscape of huge caverns and narrow tunnels. If trekking through these glow worm-lit passageways doesn't give you enough of a kick, then you can always enjoy abseiling, rock climbing, waterfall jumping and blackwater rafting underground. Great infrastructure means that New Zealand is one of the safest places in the world to take an adventure holiday - still, you need to make sure that you take out appropriate travel insurance.

Shonna Nadoff recommends that you always take out travel insurance. He's recently opted for winter travel insurance from AA Travel Insurance as he will be limited to one ski holiday this year.
