It was back in 2006 that ultra mobile PCs first made their debut. Dubbed Origami by Intel and UMPC by VIA and others, the devices got mixed reviews. Some analysts said they were too large compared to a mobile phone while others complained about the lack of keyboard, that their small size made them less convenient than a small notebook. Clamshell designs like the VIA NanoBook with a 7” screen and small keyboard revolutionized the ultra mobile market, leading to the popularity of netbooks and mini-notebooks that we see today. UMPCs have become somewhat of a niche market, but they’re still out there and still evolving, like the Owl iMpc. Stand-out Features The Owl iMpc A10 makes a statement even before you’ve seen it: iMpc meaning I am a PC. This is not to confuse it with a portable media device or a GPS unit, either of which you could mistake it for at first glance. The device is only 14.9cm x 9.3cm x 2.2cm (5.9in x 3.7in x 0.9in). I’d say that makes it not quite pocketable, but definitely small enough to fit in a small backpack and since it’s less than half a kilo in weight, it would even be comfortable to carry around in a handbag. If you’re wondering why it’s an “Owl” iMpc, it’s not because the design has got anything to do with the nocturnal birds, the manufacturer is China based Shenzen OWL Co. Ltd. I’ve no idea what the A10 stands for – must be a model iteration.
