Save on your travel insurance

By: Shonna Nadoff

Although insurance is one area that many people wouldn?t dream of skimping on, it is possible to save money very simply with these tips.

Firstly, if you?re going to be hiring a car while you?re abroad, make sure you get your insurance back in the UK. Rather than costing around ?10 a day, insuring before you go with an annual policy means that you are covered for theft and damage for a lot less.

Secondly, make sure you don?t pay for any unwanted extras. For example, your home insurance policy might already cover loss of possessions outside of the home. Similarly, any private medical insurance may cover treatment abroad, so acquiring extra would be completely superfluous.

Thirdly, check the definitions of your policy. Grey areas exist and can catch out even the most vigilant customer. Your age and any previous medical history can have a huge impact, as can whether it is immediate or close family you think you are insuring.

Finally, try not to be tempted into attaining your travel insurance from your bank or the travel agent ? they are often ludicrously over priced compared to the travel insurance policies you might find online.

There are many insurance comparison websites which will help you sort out the deal that suits you. It's also worth considering getting annual cover. Although this may seem excessive for you if you travel a very small amount over the course of a year, it is often of similar cost to insuring for only a couple of weeks over the summer! Most insurers will bank on the fact that the majority of their customers will leave their travel insurance until the last minute, and go with whatever seems right at first. But, like the other areas of your trip that require planning in advance, travel insurance should be considered carefully ? there are savings to be made if you know what you want and are happy to shop around.
