To make the most of the area in times of less turbulent weather, The Andaman Coast offers Thailand's best locations for both snorkelling and deep sea diving, though before embarking upon either you will want to make sure that your travel insurance will cover you for these kinds of activities. Phuket (pronounced 'poo-ket') is Thailand's largest diving destination also featuring the best value shops for necessary diving equipment. Phuket is largely a 'designer island' with few budget options for backpackers travelling on a shoe string, though it makes a reasonably priced diving day trip. Other attractions of the island include the Gibbon Rehabilitation Centre near Bang Pae. For more watery adventures the mainland town of Krabi makes a good stop. As well as being the main port for transport to the gorgeous sandy islands of Laem Phra Nang and Ao Nang, Krabi offers sea-kayaking tours to tourists at reasonable prices. Snorkelling is another popular activity run from this location, in addition to tours of the nearby Mangrove Swamp. Famous for being the instantly recognisable set of the film The Beach the two islands of Ko Phi Phi are now one of the most popular destinations in Thailand. In 2004 the islands also made headline news following the incredibly destructive tsunami, though since reconstruction has been swift to avoid too much damage to the increasingly successful tourist industry. Immediately south of Phuket, the islands are easily reachable by regular ferries usually departing from Krabi. For the best of the region's culinary offerings head to Ao Nang, famed for its delicious sea food. The restaurants on the western side of the beachfront road are usually the best. Try Tanta's Restaurant for the best of coastal Thai fare. The best way to make the most out of your Andaman Coast experience is to take the ferry and do as much exploring as you can. For those less interested in exploring the sea depths on diving trips the coastal, lime-stone riveted scenery should be sufficient to keep you captivated for the duration of your stay.
