The Open Air Theatre at Regent's Park

By: Kyong Reatherford

The Open Air Theatre is the only permanent outdoor theatre in Britain. It first began producing plays in 1932 with Twelfth Night and has remained since then a theatre which pays particular attention to the plays of Shakespeare. The theatre usually shows at least two of Shakespeare's plays through the summer, as well as other classic and more modern plays, but also features a handful of well known comedians and low-key, intimate concerts with artists like Jose Gonzalez and Seth Lakeman.

The theatre seats 1240 people and, with its steeply seated, semi-circular design, manages to maintain a feeling of intimacy while still catering for a fairly large number of guests. The stage is set to a backdrop of large trees, giving you the assurance that you are hidden from the rest of the park and enjoy a private view of the theatre.

Evening performances are particularly special when the stage is lit and the bar, which runs the outer semi circle of the seated area, is decorated with twinkling fairy lights in the over hanging trees. Take a picnic along and you can spread out on the lawns by the side of the theatre, or enjoy a drink in the attractive bar, and you have the perfect way to enjoy some of the best plays and concerts of the summer months.

The theatre is easy to access from central London and the surrounding area, but if you want to make a weekend of your visit there are some excellent hotels in the vicinity. The Danubius, Regent's Park Hotel offers stays at a reasonable price, with parking at the hotel and the added bonus of being literally across the road from the entrance to the park. The restaurant in the hotel is something not to be missed, specialising in Hungarian dishes, as well as a carvery and alternative menu.
