Two sides to Ibiza

By: Tracey Nesspor

In the less than pleasant winter months, it''s probably a good idea to find some way of getting through to the other side. The snows of this past December and January may have been fun for a brief while, but they drove home the fact that we are just coming out of the coldest winter on record for decades.

Even though the summer feels pretty far away at the moment, we can still look forward to the long months of good weather ahead. And making plans for the summer getaway which will put memories of frosty weather behind you is perhaps the best way of ignoring the bitter cold.

If you''re a fan of relaxing on the beach, then look no further than the Iberian Peninsula, a fantastic destination for a summer break. But you may understandably want to give the more popular locations a miss, instead perhaps looking at a slightly unusual location such as Ibiza.

You may have preconceived misgivings about the small island off the coast of the Iberian Peninsula, and there are unfortunately plenty of tourists who go there every year, but the kind of clientele it attracts will more often than not restrict themselves to the beaches or the nightclubs. It is a centre of European clubbing, true, but there is so much more than just that to keep visitors happy.

Outside of the clubbing scene, Ibiza is a very calm and beautiful location. In fact, a large proportion of it is registered as a UN World Heritage Site, protecting it from development by commercially driven real estate organizations. Aside from the fantastic landscape and wildlife which the island boasts, it also holds a claim to being the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, and there is a monument, known as The Egg, which pays tribute to the explorer.

If you are in fact interested in the nightlife, then you have a treat in store for you. Every summer, both Ibiza Town (the island''s capital) and Sant Antoni play host to the world''s most renowned DJs and electronic artists, and such household names as Tiesto and Pete Tong have in the past taken up residences at clubs for the duration of the season.

Ibiza Airport, being small, can be a bit of a headache to deal with, and you might want to try and sort out your hotel and car rental arrangements well in advance of getting to the island; furthermore, you will almost certainly make a substantial saving by hiring a vehicle before arrival.

This is probably the most stressful aspect of the island, however, and practically everything else in Ibiza provides you with opportunities to relax or party. It is a perfect holiday destination, an island of your dreams in which you can take it easy and paint the town red in equal measure.
