It was back in 2006 that ultra mobile PCs first made their debut. Dubbed Origami by Intel and UMPC by VIA and others, the devices got mixed reviews. Some analysts said they were too large compared to a mobile phone while others complained about the lack of keyboard, that their small size made them less convenient than a small notebook. Clamshell designs like the VIA NanoBook with a 7” screen and small keyboard revolutionized the ultra mobile market, leading to the popularity of netbooks and mini-notebooks that we see today. UMPCs have become somewhat of a niche market, but they’re still out there and still evolving, like the Owl iMpc.
